INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING CLINICAL LABORATORY TESTS FOR RESEARCH
The clinical laboratories are pleased to provide services to aid in basic and clinical research. In most cases the only services we can provide are the performance of the same tests that we routinely provide for patient care; however, these can usually be performed on animal blood, etc., as well as human specimens. Contact any of the individual laboratory supervisors or directors regarding any special requests.
University Hospital requires approval of the performance of research services by the Departments involved. Dr. Bock will approve all normal requests where adequate information is provided, including the tests that will be ordered, with approximate test volumes and prices. Prices can be obtained from the SMS Invision system. From the initial physician menu, specify: 32 - Reference Information, then 34 - All Lab Tests, then look up test alphabetically, price is usually on the second page of the information screens for the lab test.

For several laboratory sections, a research discount is applied to the "list" price. The laboratory section code can be seen on the second line of the help screen. The research discounts are currently as follows:

Andrology: AND 15.93%
Chemistry: CHM 61.83%
Hematology: HEM 48.62%
Immunology: IMM 38.89%
Microbiology: MIC 26.65%
All others: No discountResearch laboratory tests should generally be ordered on paper DOWNTIME FORMS, which can be obtained from the laboratory. The form must clearly indicate the tests to be performed and the grant number to be billed. The results will be sent back to the investigator as hardcopy and will not be entered into the hospital Invision system. Alternatively, tests are sometimes performed as part of a research protocol in which a patient is admitted to the hospital under a research guarantor. In this case tests are ordered and reported as for routine patient care through the Invision system, and appropriate research discounts are applied
